Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy in Maryland

Do you feel like different parts of yourself are at war? Does one part of you want connection, but another pushes people away? Do you have a harsh inner critic harming your self-worth?

Does past trauma still feel alive in your body and mind, despite years of talk therapy?

Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) can help you make sense of these internal conflicts by offering a compassionate, structured way to understand and heal the parts of you that feel stuck, scared, or reactive.

Instead of fighting against your inner world, IFS helps you build a relationship with it, so you can feel more grounded, more whole, and more in control of your responses.

What is Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy?

Internal Family Systems—often referred to as parts work—is a trauma-informed, evidence-based therapy that can help you to understand and heal your inner world.

IFS views each person as a system of protective parts, all guided by a core Self. When parts are hurt, they can take on extreme roles to protect you. IFS therapy helps you reconnect with these parts and with your core Self, so you can better understand and heal your internal system.

IFS Therapy May Be Helpful If:

  • You feel stuck or conflicted; you may have protective parts pulling you in different directions.
  • You’ve experienced trauma, and the aftereffects of these experiences just don’t leave you.
  • You want to improve your relationships with others.
  • Talk therapy hasn’t worked for you. Maybe traditional talk therapy has not allowed you to go deep enough and access your internal world.

IFS Will Help You:

  • Connect with conflicting parts, understand their concerns, and help you make decisions that fit with what your true Self wants.
  • Take a safe, compassionate approach to work with parts that carry trauma, pain, and intense feelings.
  • Gain an understanding of how your parts react/respond to other people, and why they do so, can help you to reshape how you interact with others—and feel more connected and calm as you do so.

IFS offers a gentle, effective framework for connecting with your hurt inner parts from a place of calm, curiosity, and compassion.

How Does IFS Work?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic approach that helps you understand and work with the different “parts” of yourself, especially the ones that get activated in times of stress, conflict, or emotional pain. The goal isn’t to eliminate any part of you, but to help each part feel seen, understood, and supported by your core Self.

Working with Protector Parts

Imagine a moment when you felt intense anger. So much so that it seemed to take over your entire body. In that moment, it might feel like all of you are angry. But if you zoom out, you’ll see that anger is just one part of you. There are also times when you feel calm, joyful, or kind.

IFS helps you create space from that overwhelming emotion. You’ll learn to recognize that the angry part is just that—a part—not your whole identity.

Building a Relationship with the Self

IFS is grounded in the belief that, at your core, you have a Self: a steady, centered presence that isn’t damaged, no matter what you’ve been through. It’s always there, even when it feels hidden beneath layers of fear, shame, or reactivity.

In IFS, much of the work involves strengthening your connection to this Self and helping your parts learn to trust it. When your system starts to see the Self as a reliable leader, protector parts no longer need to act out in extreme ways.

Working with Exiles

Exiles are the parts that carry pain, fear, shame, or vulnerability, often rooted in trauma. In IFS, trauma is not only what happened to you but what overwhelmed your system without safety, choice, or control.

Protector parts often hide exiles, but the pain remains buried. IFS helps you gently approach these parts with support from your Self and protectors, creating a healing relationship instead of re-traumatization. Lasting healing comes from treating the whole system, not just managing symptoms.
